What to consider
When Moving Across Borders
Your consultant will guide you through each of these before you move.
- Customs procedures
- Your Biddulphs consultant will advise on the procedures and documents required, both here and in your destination country.
- Cost basis
- Shipping costs are based on the items surveyed at your home and relate directly to volume and/or weight. Please tell your consultant about any change to the surveyed list, as it will affect the price.
- Land, sea or air
- Personal effects can travel by sea, air or land. Sea shipments usually travel in standard steel containers: a 6 metre (20 foot) container holds 30 cubic metres (1,050 cubic feet) and generally suits a medium household without patio furniture and extras; a 12 metre (40 foot) container holds 60 cubic metres (2,100 cubic feet) and normally takes a larger household.
- Sea freight to most destinations is cheaper than air freight; your consultant will advise on your route.
- Full container load
- With exclusive use of a container you decide when it ships, so you can plan packing and delivery dates. On a direct shipment without storage, the container is loaded at your home, sealed with a bolt seal and delivered in the same container to your new home.
- The exception is where customs or agricultural authorities at destination inspect the consignment. Consignments to Australia are always inspected, so they are never delivered to the new home in the container.
- Groupage or part load
- Consignments smaller than a container travel in one of our groupage containers, together with other households’ effects bound for the same destination.
- Biddulphs offers a regular groupage service to the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, the USA and many other popular destinations.
- Restrictions at destination
- Rules for importing household effects and cars differ by country, and your consultant will advise you. Our agents at destination can clarify specific questions. Generally, firearms and ammunition, drugs, flammable products, ivory, fresh food, meat, plants and pornographic material are prohibited in most countries.
- Wine and liquor
- Import rules for wine and liquor also differ from country to country. Our consultants can advise on allowances and whether duty is payable.
